Bayern Extend Win Streak vs. Göttingen
On a night reserved for affection, FC Bayern Basketball displayed no love for BG Göttingen by building a huge lead and cruising home for the 86-71 win in the Basketball Bundesliga on Valentine's night.
The Reds dominated the game for three quarters, building a 20+-point lead thanks to rose-red-hot performaces by Vladimir Lucic (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Nihad Djedovic (15 points).
Munich remain unbeaten in the 2017 calendar year, winning 13 straight in all competitions, and will now play for their first title this weekend at the BBL Cup tournament, the Top Four. Bayern will face hosts and cup-holders ALBA BERLIN on Saturday afternoon. Depending on the result, the Reds will play for their first ever domestic cup on Sunday against either Brose Bamberg or MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg.
Bayern will return home on Tuesday, February 28th for Game 1 of their best-of-three EuroCup Quarterfinals series against Unicaja Malaga. Tip-off is at 20:00 CET at the Audi Dome.
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - BGG): 19-10, 27-15, 21-19, 19-27
FC Bayern Team: Vladimir Lucic (16 points/7 rebounds), Nihad Djedovic (15/4 reb), Devin Booker (13/6 reb), Danilo Barthel (8/5 reb), Maxi Kleber (7/8 reb), Bryce Taylor (7), Nick Johnson (6/6 assists), Anton Gavel (5/6 ast), Reggie Redding (4), Georg Beyschlag (3), Maik Zirbes (2) and Marvin Ogunsipe.
Sasa Djordjevic, Head Coach, FCBB: "I have great respect for the courageous performance by Göttingen in the final quarter. We started well, quickly found our game, but we could not finish the game. Of course, we have made some changes in the squad, but the right body language and the determination was missing by us at the end. We have a difficult weekend in front of us. The result against ALBA (BERLIN) from two days ago doesn't count anymore. We expect a new game, a new competition. We have to stay grounded and give it our all."
Johan Roijakkers, Head Coach, BG Göttingen: "This was a deserved victory for Bayern. The ran us over in the first half. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the performance shown by my team. We said after the third quarter that we would not give up and try to at least win the last quarter. I am happy with the mentality shown. Bayern's style of play was impressive, today was the best I have seen by Bayern so far."
With the BBL League Cup Top Four tournament this weekend, FCBB Head Coach Sasa Djordjevic called on Vladimir Lucic, Devin Booker, Maxi Kleber, Anton Gavel and Reggie Redding to start against BG Göttingen to keep the team focused and prepared. Gavel started off the scoring, feeding Lucic with the alley-oop and he slammed it home for the 2-0 early lead. The visitors played along to keep the game tied until Booker dunked it to break the final tie, and Kleber connected for a three-pointer in the corner (11-6, 6' minutes). Bayern were able to stay ahead thanks to a pair of scores and free-throws and took an unspectacular 19-10 lead after the first quarter. (10')
Bayern's offense revved up their engine and took the game into another gear in the second period. Bryce Taylor sank a trey to start the quarter (22-12, 11'). After Booker converted the hoop-and-harm, the Reds' hottest player at the moment Nihad Djedovic continued his torrid play with three consecutive three-pointers to highlight a 16-3 run that broke open the game (38-17, 17'). Djedovic scored a layup off the transition (44-19, 19') and Booker finished the post move with a shot off the glass to take Bayern into halftime up 46-23. (20')
After a slow start to the second half, Lucic was in the middle of the next scoring run. First with a pair of scores to regain the 20+ point lead (52-30, 23'). Danilo Barthel added a dunk, then Lucic showed off his range and like Cupid with his arrow, nailed a pair of treys, Göttingen called timeout (60-35, 25'). The visitors regrouped and started displaying some confidence in their offense, however Djedovic finished the transition with a layup and the Reds were into the home stretch up 67-44. (30')
With the game in hand, Munich looked to finish off the final quarter and head into the weekend's tournament healthy and with confidence. Nick Johnson's sweet bounce pass found Taylor cutting to the hoop and he laid it in (69-44, 31'). Taylor repaid Johnson who swished the trey from the wing (72-46, 33'). Gavel got into the action, good from the corner (77-51, 35'). Göttingen could not stop Bayern's offense but to their credit, continued to fight on offense, a 7-0 spurt forced Coach Djordjevic to call timeout (37'). Göttingen made it interesting, clawing back to 81-66, but Georg Beyschlag's catch'n'shoot three-pointer ended any chance (84-66, 39'). Kleber put the final nail in this one with a dunk, Bayern win 86-71 to remain unbeaten in 2017. (40')
